Summer may be winding down, and soon it will be time for the kids to head back to school. But it won't be long before another holiday is right around the corner – Labor Day. Check out some of our picks for events (some free) in select areas of Georgia and Florida on Labor Day weekend (or the day itself) for you to enjoy.
Festivals in the Atlanta area
There's certainly no shortage of festivals in the Atlanta Area over Labor Day. One of the most popular – although not free – is DragonCon, which is a huge pop-culture convention drawing all sorts of crowds from some of the biggest names in science fiction and fantasy. If that's not your thing, you may want to avoid downtown Labor Day weekend and check out a couple other events in the area. First, you have the Art in the Park located in Marietta, Georgia taking place September 3-5. This event is completely free and perfect for families. It features plenty of artists on display and there's even a street chalk art area where little ones can draw out their creations. A little bit further away you also have the Hot Air Balloon Festival at Callaway Gardens taking place September 2-4. Although this event is not free, they do have half-priced admission at certain times (be sure to check the schedule) and kids 5 and under always get in free. They will also be offering tethered balloon rides at only $10 per adult and $5 per child, weather permitting.
Savannah Labor Day Fun
For those in the Savannah area, there's definitely Labor Day fun to be had. September 2 and 3 will be the 3rd Annual Savannah Bacon Fest taking place at the Savannah Waterfront. Admission is free and there will be plenty of food vendors selling – you guessed it – lots of bacon. You can also catch the Savannah First Friday Fireworks while you're there at the waterfront, which take place every first Friday of the month. Can't get enough fireworks? There will also be a Tybee Island Beach Bash on Sunday, September 4 featuring live music on the beach. Fireworks will take place at 9:15pm.
Central Florida Labor Day
If you live in the Central Florida area and are looking for something a little different, check out the Great Irish Hooley 2016 at Raglan Road Irish Pub in Downtown Disney. Here you'll find a variety of live Irish music performances and authentic Irish cuisine. This event takes place September 2 – September 5 so there are many different days to choose from to attend. Also worth a mention, although technically not just a Labor Day event, is Orlando's Magical Dining Month from August 29-October 2. This is your chance to visit a wide variety of restaurants offering special menus for a fixed price of $33.
