December 7, 2016
December is here, which means it’s time for lots of holiday related events. Even though we might not get snow like they do up north, that doesn’t mean we can’t get into the holiday spirit. And since know there’s a lot of gifts to buy this year, we’ve picked out family friendly events that are free or inexpensive. All of these will be going on through December.
Holidays in Atlanta
Starting December 2, Atlantic Station will be setting up their Christkindl Market which recreates open-air Christmas markets popular in Germany. This is a great place to do some holiday shopping – or window shopping, if you’re on a budget. They even feature a snow show every night at 7pm (and even more shows on Friday and Saturday).
Several places will also be decked out for the holidays and will offer family-friendly Christmas entertainment. Stone Mountain Park offers tons of Christmas activities that are fun for everyone, including lots of live performances. For an aquatic spin on things, the Georgia Aquarium will also be hosting their own holiday event they call Festival of the SEAson featuring SCUBA Claus – and underwater Santa Claus with his own specially designed Santa wetsuit. Note that both these places do require an admission fee.
And for those in the Marietta area, check out Lights of Life, which features 1.5 miles of lights you can drive thourgh. If you go Monday-Thursday it’s only $5 per car.
Lights in the Gardens in Savannah
The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens is getting into the holiday spirit with their December Nights & Holiday Lights. In addition to the beautiful gardens, they’re fully decorated for Christmas and feature lots of other holiday events such as model trains, live performances, and a visit with Santa or Mrs. Claus on select nights. The trail of lights are laid out in a walking tour, so it’s a great way to get out and get some exercise. Tickets are normally $10/person, but if you go on Thursday, it’s Family Night which means it’s $5 for everyone.
Light up Central Florida
For those in the Orlando area, we all know the theme parks all have their own Christmas events this year. But if you’re looking for something totally free to visit, check out Light Up UCF. This features a free film every day, a free light show, and Light Up Lane. If you wish, you can also participate in paid activities including ice-skating, amusement park rides, and carriage rides. We recommend checking the calendar to see what movies are playing, but also see what specials they are offering.
